How To Organize Anything

I'm no Marie Kondo, but organization is one of my favorite hobbies. There's something very calming and rewarding about cleaning out junk and creating order where there once was disorder.

I don't know if anyone really needs an instruction guide to organizing. But since there are entire TV shows and books on the subject, people must like the help. So here is my step-by-step guide on how to organize anything. The steps below are specific to physical items, but the same principles can be used for your digital life. And, at the risk of airing my dirty laundry, I'll be using a cupboard under my bathroom sink as an example.

I keep a lot of my toiletry items in this cupboard. And over the past few months it has gotten more and more disorganized. It only took me 15 minutes to completely clean and reorganize this space. So don't let clutter overwhelm you. Start small, maybe tackle one drawer or cupboard at a time before moving on to a larger area, like a closet.

Steps to organize anything:

  1. Clear everything out of the area.

  2. While clearing everything out, create a trash pile for anything that is definitely garbage.

  3. After everything is cleared out, start to group similar items together.

  4. Create a separate pile of things that should be kept somewhere else.

  5. Review each item and throw away things that you haven't used, or don't plan on using, within the next twelve months.

  6. Purchase or repurpose containers to store the items you are keeping.

  7. When placing items into the storage containers, place the most commonly used items closest to the front where they can be more easily accessed.

Not a dramatic difference, but one that will make finding things much easier. I was able to combine some things and throw away a lot of old bottles that hadn't been used in almost a year. I have an entire blog category dedicated to "organization." I'll continue to share organization ideas, products, and examples as I come across them!
